One Hot Spring to Another

Chatham Strait, AK, 12-Aug-2018 — Caro Babbo: Malaspina, Malaspina, Malaspina. This the is the sailing vessel Caro Babbo, on one-three. Caro Babbo, on one-three.

Malaspina: Malaspina on One-Three. Go ahead Caro Babbo.

Malaspina is a one hundred meter Alaska Ferry that, according to AIS, is due in Auke Bay, Juneau at 10 pm tonight, meaning she’ll make a number of stops along the way, possibly including Tenneke Springs, where we we yesterday.

Caro Babbo: We’re the sail boat ahead of you. We show a very tight CPA. What is your advice?

We’ve been motoring south from Tenneke Springs, headed to Baranof Warm Springs. Malaspina is headed north, very close to the western shore where we have been motoring to stay out of the main current. Tonight we’ll stop in Cosmos Cove — A good film reference for Topper fans.

The charted current has not yet shown up, so were making better time than expected and the predicted 10-15 knot wind also did not show up, so we’re motoring. The wind that did show up was out of the south at 4 knots; against a current, we would hope to not go backwards.

On the way down a couple of days ago, we had wonderful 10-12 knots and beat southward for 19 miles, 12 miles course made good (CMG).

Malaspina: Hold your course. We’re just sightseeing. We’ll go around you.

Our friend Sara, who with here partner Dylan, is refinished a Spencer 53, was surprised that we could call ferries and cruise ships. ”And they call us.” This is one reason to have AIS.

Abandon boats can be a wonderful deal, if you know what you’re doing. Sara and Dylan just saw a Spencer 53 for sail on Vancouver Island for $195,000. Dylan bought his for $1500. Minus sails but with all working infrastructure, but covered in nicotine. They’re be working on it for the last couple of years and will move aboard at the end of October. (They’re looking for a suit of sails for free or very cheap. Please keep an ear out, and tell you friends.)

I don’t think of Alaska Ferry boats as sightseeing along the way, but why not? Did the captain mention tyhey were going close to shore to sightsee? And when they changed course to go around our 9.5 meter sail boat, did the captain announce that that was what they were doing?

After we anchor this afternoon, I’ll try to catch up.

We’ve met wonderful people, while waiting in Auke Bay for weather to pass. It was wonderful to be back in Tenneke Springs again, but neither Jennifer nor I could stay up late enough to use the springs together when they become Co-Ed at 10pm. We bathed separately in the very wonderful hot, sulphury water.

We’re good. Contact us through the instructions on the front web page.
