700 miles from land

11-oct-2019 – In the moment I am fine. The waves roll under us, the weather routing software keeps us away from strong winds and big seas, and above all our guardian angel Ray Penson watches over us.

But those words, 700 miles from land terrify me. Last night we saw a ship on AIS one hundred miles from us, but those are probably the nearest human beings.

Things break and we recover. I fret about things that could break that we can’t recover from.

The afternoon will end soon, we’ll tuck one, may be two reefs in the main and prepare for night. Nights no longer terrify us, they are just the dark time of the day.

Friends are there by phone and internet to be our life line, thank you Erwin.

We are about one third of the way, two more weeks to go.

Are we enjoying this? No, I don’t think so. It would be better if the wind vane had not broken AGAIN, but then again we have something to do with our days. We have enough spare fuel to top off batteries for the autopilot at night.

Jennifer and I are safe and competent enough for the wind and weather we are encountering. Land fall Hilo in two weeks.
